1. What was your very first job?
I was a cashier and display assistant at a recreational apparel store that also sold a lot of sailing clothing and gear. I can pretty much answer any question about Patagonia or what kind of boxers you’ll need for your Machu Picchu trip.
2. What degree(s) do you have, and from which institutes and fields of study?
I have a BS in Marketing from the College of Charleston. For those of you not up on your bachelor degree lingo, no, that doesn’t mean my degree was bullshit.
3. What do you think is one of the most significant changes that you’ve seen since you started working in your industry?
I’ve only been working full time in this industry for a little under a year but I can already see how traditional advertising has come to define the message rather than the format. Traditional advertising now has to do more with the content of the ad message, rather than the presentation. It pushes a user to buy a product, without necessarily offering them any information that benefits them, rather than having them come to you naturally. In these terms, even some forms of digital marketing could be counted as traditional, it just depends on your message and the way you target your audience.
4. What excites you most about the digital marketing world?
Digital marketing is always evolving and expanding so I have the opportunity to learn something new every day and apply that to my day to day tasks. We do a lot of different things in the Marketing Ops department and there’s always room to apply something new and see what accomplishes the best response.
5. What do you do when you are not at work?
Water sports and snow sports are always what I want to be doing but you can usually find me eating a fat burrito somewhere or catching some sun. I typically stay pretty active though and don’t like to waste an entire day inside.
6. Do you have any hobbies?
I’ve been sailing for most of my life and I’m currently sailing competitively with a group of guys on a 24-foot boat. It’s been cool to travel around the country and sail in a bunch of different places each time we compete. I’m not a pro but it would be nice to have the occasional sponsor @bitchinsauce @lactaid @SupanneeHouseOfThai
7. What thing(s) are you obsessed with?
I love a good IPA, a new pair of socks, my crappy little film camera, peanut butter ice cream, Shrek, the ocean, traveling, and my big family.
8. What’s one thing about yourself that would surprise people?
I can’t see much out of one eye and cheated on the eye exam portion of my driver’s test.
9. What’s the best advice you’ve ever received?
“Don’t be a sheep” – my dad
